Some styles, mediums, works and artists might have more of a following or consensus, but all art has a mission - to evoke a reaction. It could inspire, enrage, amuse or offend but if it triggers a reaction, then mission accomplished. Some people are fine ambling through museums to see curated and filtered collections. Others prefer to dive into galleries big and small, to view works by established and emerging artists. You can also view art by walking along just about any urban landscape. Good art lifts my spirits and inspires me to create. Bad art either triggers laughter, rage or indifference. I will appreciate any attempt at art if it was created with passion, even if I view it as a failure. The only thing that really pisses me off is non-art that is passed off as art (a giant canvas with single stripe that sells for $3500 or a giant white room with a single red spatula affixed to the wall). That kinda crap just makes me want to slap people.

I really don’t think you can make a distinction between good art and bad. I love your blog! I immediately wanted to answer your fb question "what does bad art do to you?" but first I had to read your artical even tho my responses were flooding out. I'm happy I did because the quote: “I live here because L.A. is ugly… If I lived in a great beautiful city, why would I do art? I always have to be slightly angry to do art and L.A. provides that.” struck a cord with me.. At first my response was a "HA! I live in LA cause its beautiful, the mountains, the ocean, the canals, the lavender, sage, poppies, and all that glitters" but then I realized, it wasn't all true... I don't live in Santa Barbara anymore because it was too pretty.... all the above mentioned without the homeless, the drugs, the pain, the smog, the anguish, the poverty, the broken dreams.... its the negative that inspires me as much as the beauty... My hometown creates a stagnant uninspired pleasant existance whereas LA makes you work a bit. This brings me to my initial response to your FB question. As much as "good art" inspires my imagination, "bad art" inspires me to do, to be active, to accomplish because "if they can do it..." A painting that makes me cry ignites stories in my mind, finds my soul and brings it to the surface so I am totally feeling every experience mixing it with imagination and emotion... but a lousy commercial comedy about a the sexes that makes millions of dollars, makes me write... pen to paper...plan... see comedy shows I'm not in, make phone calls, do do do. So much like LA, the bad and the good are the perfect combonation for art. XOXO!

Hey darlin! I love your blog!
